Teacher Story Time (I know it's long but well worth the read)

Before I conduct my observations let me tell you what happened today...it happened. It finally happened. I have an all girls class. At first, I was dying on the inside because middle school girls can be....difficult in ways that clash with my personality. I am a sympathetic versus empathetic person so sometimes I do have issues with some of my female students. However, I have been blessed with a group of girls that are smart, funny and cool. Because of this we get to have "girl time" where I basically listen and they give me all of that piping hot tea that I love so much. So all in all we have a good time in there and we are open and discuss a lot of things. So cat is out of the bag at work that I am married. Everybody knows, faculty, staff, students...I wear my ring, "Mrs." is everywhere and people gossip. No biggie. So in being open and trying to make a real world connection to math we get to a wedding word problem. I discuss how expensive it is and why I opted for the courthouse wedding and they called me basic, I told them my in-laws were not my cup of joe they called me shady cool....UNTIL...a student in this all girl class of 14 asks " When are we going to meet your hus- spouse?" The other girls gasp. I'm a quick thinker so I'm like aww hellll I know exactly where this is going. Before I could even get a quick-witted statement out, she continues..." I mean we all have the same question...I'm just trying to find out if it's a man or woman." The class lost it....'no why did you ask her...i didn't think you were really going to say it.' I am in the front of the room like how do I respond to this. I need to abort mission. HELP. I tell them give me wait time. Then my co-teacher says 'If you don't think they can handle it. Then don't say anything..." The class is in an uproar. I'm laughing because this is comical so I step outside them my co-teacher comes and we confer that I shouldn't address it because these girls are messy. I concur. HOWEVER, you just said if I don't think they can handle it.... why would they not be able to handle that I have a husband? Now it is obvious that I do have a wife. I reentered the room and they were like 'dang, now she's not going to tell us.' Luckily these kids can't infer so...

I really wanted to share because I don't really care and it doesn't matter and it really has no affect on how bomb or likable of a teacher I am. But I don't want other kids asking me or becoming the rumor of the school and parents calling and all of that so I had to refrain but sheesh...it finally happened.
